Conversation around proposed "Collaborative Lesson Planning" sessions

After reflecting on our conversation around "My cunning plan" to set up an opportunity for teachers to do collaborative lesson planning I have a concern and a request. Please give me as much feedback as you can on both.

Concern: I felt like the protocol used after the reading in which we shared our questions and made comments did not encourage full participation from the whole group. Did it feel the same to you? Suggestions for protocols to use in the future to get help us get broader participation?

After having more time to think about the "Proposal for collaborative work sessions" document
could you please provide additional feedback.

Those of you that missed the meeting can find all the documents including the one referred to above at http://cms9.pps.k12.or.us/.docs/pg/12147

Please talk to your colleagues and give me feed back ASAP so I can use it to shape the plan.

Comments from Cleveland SS teachers:

1. It would be helpful if planning was during a day long PD, after lunch.

2. A common bell schedule, district-wide, would make this easier.

3. How wold people be grouped?

4. Is it mandatory to use the adoption materials?

5. We need a central clearinghouse of teacher-created lessons (website.)

6. Is this a drive to standardize curriculum?

Thanks for the input Tim and everyone at Cleveland. I agree with numbers 1 and 2 but it is hard to get 3 small schools in the same building to share the same schedule much less the whole district, beside that would certainly be heavy handed standardization from the district.

The idea in my "Cunning Plan" is to have teachers from 4 schools that teach the same class, say U.S. History, get together and plan and implement a lesson or set of lessons.

The plan does not require the use of adopted materials but there are certainly a lot of great resources in them that we all have access to and it only seems natural to use them. I would also be surprised if teachers elected to use ONLY adopted core materials.

There has been much discussion and planning at the teacher and IT level about setting up a clearinghouse and the lessons developed during these planning sessions will undoubtedly make their way into a clearinghouse.

This is a drive toward collaboration across the district not standardization.

Please respond with further inquiries. Of Course, that is what this blog is for.

In light of the written and verbal feedback received the decision has been made to create the framework for this experience and invite teachers to work together voluntarily.

I will be posting these sessions on the online campus but I need you feedback. Should these be scheduled during the school day or after school? Would it be best to schedule an initial meeting whereby the group of teachers could determine the schedule that works best for them?
